Does mechanical engineering in the maritime sector appeal to you? Do you want your workday to involve more than just modeling? Do you enjoy discussing technical matters with colleagues, clients, and suppliers, and does working in an international environment excite you? Then read on!
Your role In this varied role, you will develop detailed, watertight solutions—such as complex hull doors and hatches—for yachts and naval vessels. Your clients will primarily be international shipyards. You will work on two or three projects simultaneously while also handling smaller assignments in between.
What does your day look like? At the start of a project, you discuss technical specifications and requirements with the project manager and the sales representative. You receive a basic 3D model from the client, potentially supplemented by 2D sketches. You then begin modeling a basic concept in 3D using SolidWorks. You take into account technical manufacturability, material availability, and high quality standards, ensuring that all technical aspects are feasible within the client's aesthetic design. During this phase, you maintain frequent contact with an engineer at the client's company to align on technical details. Next, you submit the concept to the client. Following any necessary adjustments and client approval, it is time to create detail, elevation, production, and assembly drawings. This work is carried out by a detail engineer in consultation with you and the engineering manager. You coordinate the activities, serve as the point of contact for technical questions, and review the drawings. Occasionally, you may work on some detail drawings yourself if doing so helps keep the project moving forward. Once the drawings are complete, you hand them over to the work preparation team, which arranges production with various suppliers. You also liaise with these suppliers regarding technical matters. This involves, for instance, structural engineering firms, companies handling hydraulic and electrical systems, and inspection bodies that verify adherence to high quality standards. You work closely with fellow engineers, project managers, and engineering counterparts at client and supplier companies. These clients and suppliers are based in the Netherlands as well as in other regions—including Europe, the Americas, Turkey, and the Far East—with English serving as the primary language of communication. You coordinate matters via email, telephone, and Microsoft Teams. When necessary, you visit shipyards and suppliers to discuss technical details on-site and verify that production matches the specifications and drawings. Occasionally, this requires spending one or more days abroad.
Finally, assembly takes place at Newthex’s own facilities. You are involved in the testing and client acceptance phases, meaning you are frequently present in the assembly hall. You contribute ideas and solutions whenever adjustments or modifications are required. In this way, you see the results of your work firsthand and help deliver high-quality products to satisfied customers!
