Overview
As a Staff Software Engineer in Airwallex’s Payments Team, you will shape the architecture of next‑generation Payment Acceptance infrastructure and guide the technical direction of a high‑volume distributed backend. You’ll build scalable services and REST APIs within a microservices landscape, coordinating with product and external teams to translate merchant needs into robust solutions. Your work directly affects merchant experience and business outcomes, from gateways to local payment methods. You’ll mentor engineers, improve reliability and observability, and raise the engineering bar across the platform.

- Lead the architecture and evolution of payment acceptance infrastructure
- Design and build scalable backend services, REST APIs, event-driven systems, and microservices components
- Drive initiatives across payment gateways, acquiring, issuing, card networks, and local payment methods
- Collaborate with product, business, infrastructure, and external teams to translate merchant needs into technical solutions
- Conduct architectural reviews, address technical debt, and improve system reliability, scalability, and operational effectiveness
- Raise the engineering bar through design, code quality, testing, observability, and mentorship
Belangrijkste vereisten
- 10+ years of software engineering experience withStaff-level leadership or equivalent ownership of complex backend systems
- Experience designing and operating high-volume distributed systems, preferably in payments/fintech
- Hands-on experience with Java or Kotlin and Spring / Spring Boot
- REST APIs, backend microservices, Kafka-based event streams, distributed data stores (e.g., Cassandra, Hazelcast, Oracle Coherence)
- Cloud platforms (GCP or AWS), Docker and Kubernetes
- Observability/operational tooling (New Relic, StatsD, ELK, Datadog, Prometheus)
- Proven ability to lead projects from concept to production with emphasis on quality, reliability, maintainability
