Overview
As EO Future Missions Optical Payload Engineer, you define and develop innovative optical payload concepts for future Earth observation missions, enabling the integration of emerging sensing technologies.
You collaborate across divisions to mature technology breadboarding, assess performance, and lead pre-development activities.
You act as instrument officer in Phase 0/Phase A and shape roadmaps for quantum and photonic sensors within the Future EO programme.
You join a cross-disciplinary team to transform advanced sensing concepts into mission-ready payloads.
- Verantwoordelijkheden
- Identify and assess new observation principles and technologies for EO future missions in collaboration with internal teams and external partners
- Maintain awareness of emerging sensing technology R&D and coordinate with other ESA directorates and external programs
- Define performance and TRL of new sensing payloads with EO system engineers
- Manage industrial contracts for study and risk retirement of emerging sensing payloads per the Future EO plan
- Conduct technology breadboarding and pre-development activities for emerging sensors
- Develop ground-based or airborne instrument models to support concepts
- Serve as optical instrument officer for EO future missions in Phase 0/Phase A
- Act as focal point for quantum and photonics sensing in missions under evaluation, supporting proposals and mission studies
- Contribute to EO Quantum Sensing Strategy and roadmap and to technology roadmaps for other emerging sensors
- Collaborate with multiple divisions and directorates, sharing knowledge and providing domain-specific training

- At least five years of relevant experience in preparation and development of space optical instruments
- Experience with innovative optical sensing technologies such as quantum or photonics sensors
- Ability to work in team or project environments
- Strong motivation to investigate new sensing concepts involving emerging technologies
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to coordinate with scientists and users to define mission needs
- Ability to contribute to dynamic, creative environments in EO mission preparatory phases
