Setting Out Engineer | Data Center Construction | Netherlands (Site Based) We are seeking a practical, accurate and highly motivated Setting Out Engineer to support the delivery of complex construction projects, including data centres, in the Netherlands.

Working under the guidance of senior project management, the successful candidate will translate approved construction drawings, coordinated BIM information and survey data into precise positions, levels and alignments on site.

The role covers civil, structural and architectural (CSA) works and their interfaces with mechanical and electrical systems. You will collaborate with project management, design, BIM, construction and quality teams, alongside specialist subcontractors, to ensure works are delivered accurately and efficiently.

This is a hands-on engineering role suited to someone who takes ownership of accuracy, enjoys working on site and proactively identifies discrepancies before they become construction issues.

Key Responsibilities

Establish, verify and maintain project survey control points, benchmarks, gridlines, coordinates and levels in accordance with the approved survey strategy.

Set out foundations, structural elements, slabs, walls, openings, penetrations, embedded items, equipment bases, external works and associated CSA and MEP interfaces.

Operate robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, digital levels, laser equipment and approved survey software to achieve required tolerances.

Interpret construction drawings, coordinated BIM models, specifications, survey information and approved-for-construction documentation.

Conduct independent setting-out checks, including pre-pour inspections, anchor bolts, openings, penetrations and equipment-base verification.

Complete as-built surveys, comparing installed works against approved documentation and reporting deviations, clashes or out-of-tolerance conditions.

Coordinate with site teams and subcontractors to ensure setting-out requirements, reference information and tolerances are clearly understood.

Maintain accurate and traceable survey records, field data, inspection evidence, calibration records and quality documentation.

Raise RFIs and technical queries where information is unclear or inconsistent, ensuring no unapproved design changes are implemented on site.

Plan and carry out all setting-out activities safely, adhering to approved method statements, risk assessments and project procedures.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Degree, higher technical diploma or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Geomatics, Land Surveying, Construction Engineering, Building Engineering or a related discipline.

Minimum of 3 years' hands-on setting-out or site engineering experience on large-scale or technically complex construction projects.

Proven experience operating robotic total stations and digital levelling equipment, including Leica, Trimble, Topcon or equivalent systems.

Ability to interpret construction drawings and coordinated BIM information using AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks or similar platforms.

Strong understanding of construction tolerances, survey control, concrete and structural works, builders' work and CSA/MEP interfaces.

Excellent written and spoken English, with Dutch or another European language considered an advantage.

VCA-VOL certification or willingness to obtain certification before or shortly after commencement.

Previous experience on data centre, mission-critical, advanced manufacturing or similarly complex projects is highly desirable.

Additional Requirements

Valid driving licence recognised in the Netherlands and Europe.

Willingness to work full-time on site in Lelystad, Netherlands.

Flexibility to travel occasionally to other European project locations if required.

Legal right to work in the Netherlands.

Personal Attributes

Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, with the confidence to stop and verify information when discrepancies arise.

Ability to take ownership of assigned responsibilities from initial preparation through to verification and close-out.

Confidence in identifying and challenging technical discrepancies, unsafe practices or non‑compliant work.

Collaborative approach when working with project stakeholders, supervisors, trades and specialist subcontractors.

Proactive attitude towards learning, problem-solving and improving site engineering processes.

Strong organisational skills and the ability to make informed decisions in a fast-paced construction environment.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing The successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to maintaining a safe and healthy working environment by complying with company policies, project safety requirements and applicable legislation.

This includes promoting a positive safety culture, identifying potential risks and supporting continuous improvement initiatives to protect the wellbeing of colleagues, subcontractors and project stakeholders.
